WATER, A CRUCIAL AND INCREASINGLY VULNERABLE RESOURCE
The primary conclusions of the IPCC’s 6th assessment report, published in August 2021, confirm that we are experiencing persistent delays on the path towards a +1.5 or 2°C temperature increase limit. According to the IPCC, the greatest risks posed by climate change affect water first and foremost. This crucial resource is already under significant anthropogenic pressure, resulting in increased risks for populations, ecosystems and human activities.

WATER, KEY TO MEETING THE TARGETS SET IN THE PARIS AGREEMENT AND THE 2030 AGENDA
Water must be treated as a priority in the commitments of the Paris Climate Agreement, consistently with the 2030 Agenda and 17 Sustainable Development Goals and the Convention on Biological Diversity. No life is possible without water; it is crucial for for human livelihoods, as well as for health, food and agriculture, biodiversity, energy, education, peace and security, and gender equality inter alia. Water is also central to the 21 water-related targets of the 2030 Agenda. Protecting the quality and quantity of water resources is crucial to climate change mitigatation and to supporting healthy ecosystems.

RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE FWP’s MEMBERS
The 200 members of the FWP stress the urgent need to drastically reduce global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in order to remain below an average warming of 2°C and to pursue efforts to limit global warming to +1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels by the end of the century. Members also draw the international community’s attention towards the need to take urgent adaptation measures that will address climate change in its current and future forms.
