Water & Climate

Water is the main marker of climate change. However, water stakeholders have solutions for both adapting to and mitigating the effects of climate change. The French Water Partnership is carrying out a number of activities on this subject.

Objectives

Our working priorities

The mission of the Water & Climate working group of the French Water Partnership is to facilitate the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement in the water field by:

  1. Contributing to a better integration of the water/climate nexus in international negotiations and policies, and advocating an upward revision of commitments on freshwater in its links with climate by all stakeholders;
  2. Supporting the operational implementation of international commitments and the emergence of solutions linked to water and freshwater ecosystems, and the integration of water and sanitation issues into all areas of climate action for both mitigation and adaptation;
  3. Promoting the expertise of FWP members internationally in mitigating the root causes of climate change, addressing its effects and building resilience over the long term;
  4. Raising awareness, knowledge and capacities of all stakeholders at all levels on the subjects of water and climate change;
  5. Strengthening the FWP’s network of international water and climate partners;
  6. Raising awareness and educating national stakeholders about international issues.

Our Water & Climate advocacy targets

The FWP’s comprehensive Water & Climate advocacy, co-constructed through its working group in cooperation with all FWP members, is based on 7 main priorities:

  1. Putting water at the heart of climate change adaptation;
  2. Take into account the role of water in mitigation;
  3. Ensure consistency with the Sustainable Development Goals;
  4. Strengthen international commitments and encourage their implementation in national policies;
  5. Include knowledge, capacity building and nature-based solutions in policies and strategies at all levels;
  6. Encourage appropriate funding;
  7. Unite for greater visibility.
