4th anniversary of Agenda 2030 – 20 September 2019 – Water at the heart of change : Accelerating to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals

Update 2020-02-18

Agenda 2030 and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) approved by all the world’s States in September 2015 call for radical changes in development patterns. The challenge is simple: to enable the living world to flourish in the best possible conditions and in the long term.
In the field of water, the latest reports by the United Nations, the UNECSO and the World Bank estimate that in 2015, 2.1 billion people in the world did not have access to safe drinking water services and 4.5 billion did not have toilets; 80% of wastewater was discharged into the environment without treatment. Furthermore, projections show that 40% of the world’s population will face water shortages in 2050 and that the financing needed for drinking water and sanitation for all is three times higher than current investments.
In this context, AFD, CNRS and the FWP launched a multi-stakeholder work in 2018 to identify the levers that have made it possible to accelerate the implementation of Agenda 2030 in some sixty French territories (metropolitan France and Overseas France) and foreign countries based on water projects. This work led to meetings held on 26 June 2019 in Paris, bringing together many territorial and scientific stakeholders.
The present web pages are dedicated to this work and present the many lessons that have emerged. They are intended to be enriched with new experiences in order to inspire decision-makers at all levels and the general public on the most solid bases possible.
