Entrusted with the quality and performance of both its sanitation and water public services, the city of Paris implements water policies (drinking water, rain and waste waters, raw waters) by exercising control on its unique public operator “Eau de Paris”, whose in charge of both production and distribution of drinking water, and ensuring city-wide sanitation (Sewer system management, street cleanliness).
Committed to building a sustainable future, the City of Paris has adopted the ‘ParisPluie’ plan. Its aim: to make use of 100% of its rainwater. Currently, the city is impermeable, a large proportion of rainwater is lost in the sewer system. This means in case of heavy rain, the sewer system can become overwhelmed. Considering the environmental challenges of the 21st-century, A new water management method is necessary. It makes use of rainwater directly where it falls. Such is the ambition of the ‘ParisPluie’ plan. The goals of the plan are ambitious: to increase biodiversity throughout the city, create and develop cool islands, and allow swimming in the Seine. The success of the ‘ParisPluie’ plan depends on involvement of all stake holders working for the City of Paris, along with the involvement of citizens and visitors. To turn rainwater into a resource for Paris, for a greener, more sustainable city ready to face the challenge of climate change.
