Irstea is the French National Research Institute of Science and technology for Environment and Agriculture. Its multidisciplinary expertise enables Irstea to bring solutions to technological, industrial and social challenges in the agricultural and environmental fields, notably water management and processing.

Irstea provides in-depth expertise of current trends (technologies, regulations, market trends) and disruptive innovation to a variety of partners and stakeholders. Irstea has a dozen technological platforms (including water treatment) open to companies for joint research projects. Irstea is also a leading player of French and European normative approach, and contributes to the definition of labels and industry standards. Recognized by its public and private partners, for its track record for innovation, Irstea has been awarded the Carnot Institute label since 2006.

Strengthening knowledge on climate change

Project description

Scientists are currently developing adaptation and management strategies to anticipate the future effects of climate change in Europe. Irstea researchers participated in the European ClimAware project, focusing on the impact of climate change on water resources on a continental and regional scale, and focusing in particular on 4 reservoirs in the Seine river basin, where there is an increasing risk of drought levels by 2050.

Project description

Irstea worked alongside its partners to develop a training and teaching method to help
water managers to manage water resources sustainably at the level of their own region
in a context of global and climate changes through the COOPLAAGE / Wat-A-Game. The goal of this method is to incite stakeholders to take action by providing a set of easyto-use,
simple, rigorous tools and methods to set up participatory workshops focused on
modeling, simulation, planning, monitoring and assessment. The COOPLAAGE pack also
includes a Wat-A-Game kit containing material and methodological components for creating
an analogical model (with cards and marbles) of a play version of a catchment area as
well as COOPLAN processes for participatory planning and Just-A-Grid, which is designed
to introduce and foster discussions on water-related principles of justice.

Project description

À destination des maîtres d’ouvrages et maîtres d’œuvre, ce guide a été conçu comme un outil d’accompagnement pour la conception et la réalisation d’un projet de traitement des eaux usées par filtres plantés de végétaux. Les départements d’Outre-mer (DOM) sont porteurs d’enjeux d’assainissement particulièrement sensibles. Une des problématiques majeures provient d’une mauvaise adéquation des technologies, au contexte particulier des tropiques. Les préconisations présentées ici, construites dans le cadre de recherches réalisées en Outre-mer français, peuvent être utilisées dans l’ensemble de la zone tropicale. Ce guide fait le point sur dix années de recherches menées à travers les cinq DOM visant à adapter une technologie largement éprouvée en climat tempéré. Les enseignements tirés se basent sur des suivis poussés, ainsi qu’une étude spécifique sur le choix des végétaux.
