EDF combines its expert teams, R&D and engineering, experience as an industrial operator, and close attention to customers, to devise competitive solutions that feature both economic development and climate protection.
EDF conducted a full technical examination of the Sarrans hydropower dam by draining all water from the reservoir. EDF and local decision-makers set up three groups to work on these subjects, gathering around thirty relevant actors. The concerted efforts of local actors resulted in innovative solutions for improving water quality, improving living conditions for fish, protecting wildlife habitat and supporting economic development and tourism.
With the rapid retreat of the Sea of Ice, the subglacial water intake for the Les Bois hydropower
plant was positioned at the glacier terminus and buried under alluvium.
Climate change adaptation led EDF to undertake the construction of a new intake 800
meters upstream to allow the hydropower plant to continue operating. Design and engineering
studies were carried out from 2005 to 2008 by EDF's Hydraulic Engineering
Center. The main works were launched in late 2008, with a view to commissioning a temporary
water intake in April 2009 and a new permanent intake in April 2011. The plant has
operated with the new water intake since 2011.
Hydropower, which is a renewable energy, has an important role to play in decarbonizing
electricity and therefore mitigating climate change.
En 2016, EDF lance les travaux du barrage de Poutès, sur l'Allier, pour ouvrage entièrement reconfiguré. La solution technologique, une première mondiale, prévoit d'abaisser sensiblement la hauteur du barrage. L'objectif : faciliter le déplacement des poissons migrateurs et le transit des sédiments indispensables à la biodiversité de la rivière. En amont, la quasi suppression de la retenue d'eau permettra de redonner à la rivière son profil naturel et de créer des habitats favorables aux espèces aquatiques de la vallée. Grâce de nombreuses innovations techniques, cet ouvrage unique permettra de concilier les impératifs environnementaux tout en préservant la production d’énergie bas carbone.
The implementation of the GEMAPI competence (Management of Aquatic Environments and Flood Prevention) today calls for solutions that should make it possible to reconcile flood prevention with the integrated management of aquatic environments.Innovative uses of this type of solution have been developed in particular in the Durance watershed in the Southern French Alps, where the problem of existing eroded land and excess fine sediments in rivers is responsible for the degradation of terrestrial and aquatic environments and an increase in the risk of flooding. In order to reduce these sediment inputs while initiating a process of ecological restoration of these degraded environments, an innovative use of plant engineering has been carried out, via its role of erosion and sedimentation control, within the Durance basin.
La Lemme, torrent de montagne du Jura, ses affluents et les tourbières associées constituent une réserve naturelle riche en biodiversité et essentielle pour la préservation de plusieurs espèces emblématiques de papillon, de libellules et d’oiseaux. Ces zones sont classées Natura 2000.
L’agence de l’eau Rhône-Méditerranée Corse a soutenu une action collective, menée par le Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura et la Fédération du Jura pour la Pêche, visant la renaturation de ces sites naturels essentiels à l’équilibre du territoire.
Concrètement, plusieurs actions ont été menées depuis 2009 :
-Restauration de la Lemme dans son état sauvage sur un linéaire total de 5 km et des tourbières du marais du Châtelet sur une étendue de 60 hectares.
-Effacement des quatre ouvrages hydrauliques existants sur la Lemme, de façon à restaurer la continuité écologique de 17 500 mètres de ruisseaux.
-Revitalisation de cinq marais, soit environ 110 hectares.

La renaturation de l’île du Rhin, est l’un des plus gros projets de ce type en Europe : réhabilitation de plus de 100 hectares de milieux naturels sur l’île du Rhin et restauration d’un ancien bras du Rhin, long de 7 kilomètres.
Le bras du Rhin réaménagé permet aujourd’hui la libre circulation des poissons entre le Vieux-Rhin et l’amont du barrage de Kembs et abrite des zones de reproduction à grands poissons migrateurs.
Dans la partie forestière, il a une fonction de ré-humidification de la forêt et de diversification d’habitat pour les espèces animales liées aux milieux humides.
Après un an et demi de travaux, plus de 380 000 m3 de déblais ont été retirés ou déplacés, 150 000 plantations effectuées et des dizaines d’espèces animales et végétales recensées.
