BRGM

BRGM IS FRANCE’S LEADING PUBLIC INSTITUTION WORKING IN EARTH SCIENCE APPLICATIONS FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF SURFACE AND SUBSURFACE RESOURCES AND RISKS.

Its action is oriented towards scientific research, public policy support and international cooperation. Water resources management in the context of climate and global change is at the heart of its actions. The brgm is involved in the identification of pollutants and of contaminants transfer within aquifers, water databases, socio-economic assessment of protective/management measures and development of sustainable integrated water management with maintenance/restoration of quality, flood risk prevention due to water table rise.

Assessing the threats of submersion and erosion to the Var coastline

Project description

The French geological survey (BRGM) conducted a study to assess global change impacts on the Var coastline, particularly the submersion risk. The results will be use as support for decision concerning spatial planning. The hydrodynamic modeling tools developed for this study were found to be particularly innovative and are ready to be used for other future projects.

ANR AMETHYST: Assessment of changes in southern Mediterranean hydroresources

This interdisciplinary project analyzes environmental and socio-economic factors on two river basins in Tensift (Morocco) and Merguellil (Tunisia) in relation to the spatio-temporal dynamics of water resources in order to evaluate their joint development. Essential work involves identifying future scenarios and potential levers for action.

Project description

This project coordinated by BRGM for the Agglomeration of Montpellier studied in depth all the underground reservoir which supplies drinking water to most of the population of Montpellier. This comprehensive local study, ranging from the assessment stage to recommendations, addresses multi-use issues and highlights links between socio-economic and climatic factors.

Assessing the vulnerability of water resources in Martinique Island

Project description

The DEAL Martinique, in partnership with BRGM, developed innovative modeling, unprecedented in the Caribbean region, to adapt to a specific environment. To assess the impact of climate change, modeling was conducted by means of a comprehensive hydrological model, developed by BRGM (the French geological survey) based on Météo France climate projections. In keeping with the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report of 2014, two climate scenarios were studied for the 2081-2100 period - the RCP 4.5 scenario (average emissions trajectory) and RCP 8.5 (high emissions trajectory). The results of the study have been used to produce trend projections which public authorities will be able to use to adapt water resource management to climate change.
