ACF - Action Against Hunger

ACF’s mission consists of saving lives via the prevention, detection and treatment of malnutrition, in particular during and following disasters and conflicts.

Through Water, Sanitation and Hygiene activities, ACF WASH programmes, set in 45 countries, aim at preventing & treating malnutrition and prevent / respond to humanitarian crisis.

Indeed, ACF works towards an integrated approach to the management of risks linked to natural disasters, integrating climate change adaptation and supporting sector coordination through standby partnership support to the Global WASH Cluster (WASH emergency coordination group).

In 2014, ACF-International was active in over 47 countries, coming to the aid of around 7 million individuals, including 3.4 million beneficiaries of WASH programmes.

Project description

Developed by UNICEF in 2012 in partnership with humanitarian actors such as ACF, this program aims to reduce diarrheal disease in children in an effective manner and to gain an objective view of knowledge about the link between water, sanitation and hygiene and their impact on treating malnutrition.

Project description

L'Ethiopie a connu en 2016 une de ses pires sécheresses en 30 ans. La menace d'une crise alimentaire majeure s'intensifie sur le pays. Action contre la Faim appuie les communautés pastorales et agropastorales de Borena pour qu’elles puissent faire face aux périodes de sècheresse, via notamment l’amélioration de l'accès à l'eau, la construction ou la réhabilitation d'infrastructures de collecte et de distribution, l’élaboration de plans de salubrité, la promotion de l’agriculture familiale, la diversification des sources de revenus et de semences, le renforcement de l'accès aux soins de santé et de nutrition de qualité pour les enfants sous-nutris.

An early-warning system in Madagascar to improve humanitarian aid

Project description

Acute Malnutrition (AM) is prevalent in Madagascar, and its SW region is a hot spot for climate change. AM is multifactorial and linked to climate via its impact on water and food security. It is hard to identify the underlying causes of nutritional crises, and so to anticipate and manage them. ACF installed 10 piezometric probes to monitor groundwater and a meteorological station in the district of Betioky, enabling quarterly bulletins to be produced for monitoring the hydro-climatic situation. Our project aims to 1) study the relationship between nutritional and hydro-climatic indicators; 2) support the set-up of a more reliable data-collection system to provide scientifically robust alerts about climate and nutritional crises in the region. Our results will contribute to a better understanding of the link between trends in MA and hydro-climatic indicators. They will also support anticipation of and an improved response to nutritional crises related to water resources and climate.
