Human rights to water and sanitation: the power of civil society to influence public policy

This round table will present various initiatives led by civil society organisations to strengthen the legal recognition of human rights to drinking water and sanitation by countries, as well as the implementation of ambitious public policies on access to water and sanitation for all, particularly for the most vulnerable populations.
Purpose:
– To share the advocacy work and expertise of civil society in different countries on the human rights to drinking water and sanitation.
– To examine the opportunities and limits of legal recognition of the human rights to drinking water and sanitation at national level, and the knock-on effects on public policies.
Program:
- Introduction
- Presentations by 3 panellists:
- The constitutionalisation of the human right to drinking water in Mali in 2023 and the role of civil society
- The new standards for access to water for all in France and the associations’ recommendations for their application by local authorities
- Making the human rights to water and sanitation effective in West and Central Africa: presentation of the publication by the Alliance d’Afrique Francophone pour l’Eau et l’Assainissement (POSCEAS)
- Discussion with the audience and conclusion
