Reuse of Products from Sanitation Systems: A Comparative Perspective in Low- and Middle-Income Countries and in France
pS-Eau is currently investigating the topic of reuse of products from sanitation systems through a project funded by the Rhône Méditerranée Corse Water Agency, in collaboration with INRAE, Cadi Ayyad University in Marrakech, and the Institute of Environmental Sciences at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, with a particular emphasis on the Mediterranean region.
Taking a broader perspective, a circular approach to sanitation is not just about achieving health and environmental goals but also about generating materials that can be integrated into other production chains. The sanitation chain should be reimagined to include this valorization step, making it an integral part of the process.
Through its network, pS-Eau has identified the difficulties and needs related to the implementation of reuse of products from sanitation systems. By reviewing literature, analyzing case studies, and conducting interviews with project leaders and experts, we have highlighted the following key questions and challenges for such projects:
- Identifty and align with the regulatory and normative sectoral frameworks for sanitation and reuse pathways
- How to manage health risks?
- What environmental coherence?
- What management and economic models?
- What impact and consideration of sociological aspects?
Purpose:
The objective of this side event is to share these insights and illustrate them with feedback from the SIAAP (Sanitation public operator for Paris agglomeration), within the framework of decentralized cooperation and in France.
Program:
- pS-Eau: Challenges, difficulties, and opportunities for the reuse of products from sanitation systems in low- and middle-income countries
